AI tool that turns saved Instagram Reels into map pins you'll actually use
Built from idea to launch in one week. 950+ places extracted and counting.
About
Hold My Pin is an AI-powered Instagram DM bot that extracts location info from Reels and posts and sends back a Google Maps link. I built it entirely solo in one week — from the initial idea through product design, engineering, monetization, and launch. This case study walks through how I went from a personal frustration to a shipped product with real users.
The Challenge
Key Insight
The best UX was no new UX. Creators already share Reels through DMs — so the entire interaction lives inside a behavior people already have.
The Approach
Validated the idea and tested different formats
I started by validating whether the problem was worth solving — talking to people, checking how they save and rediscover places from Reels. Before committing to a format, I explored several approaches: a browser extension, a standalone app, a Telegram bot. Each had trade-offs around friction, reach, and technical complexity. Instagram DMs won because it met users exactly where the problem already lived — no new app, no new habit.
Designed the product around an existing behavior
Instead of building a standalone app, I designed the experience as a DM bot — zero onboarding, zero UI to learn. Send a Reel, get a map pin. Every design decision was about reducing friction: no sign-up walls, no extra steps, no context-switching.
Built the full stack solo in one week with AI-assisted workflow
I used Claude Code as my core development tool to ship the entire stack in 7 days — Node.js backend, Meta Messaging API, Gemini Vision for extracting locations from video content, Google Places API for matching, and Stripe for subscription billing. The AI-assisted workflow is what made solo = fast.
Launched and grew through content
Designed the brand identity (violet/magenta palette), built the marketing site, and ran GTM through Instagram and LinkedIn — demos, carousels, story sequences, and referral campaigns. 950+ places extracted by real users with zero paid acquisition.

Results
What I'd do differently
Still building. Improving the product based on real user feedback, creating content to grow the audience, and building recognition around the project. Design, engineering, and GTM — all still me.
